Chem 2320 Quiz 1
Instructions: This quiz is open-book. You may use any book, magazine,
or other printed or web-based materials you feel are helpful. You may
discuss this quiz with other members of this immediate class and section.
I will award extra credit (5 pts) to those who work in groups of 2-5 and
who submit a group quiz. You may not consult with anyone outside of this
immediate class and section about this quiz. You must show all your
work for full credit, or to receive partial credit if you make a mistake.
- (10 points) Resonance, polarizability, electronegativity, inductive
effects, charge, and hybridization can all affect the strength of Lewis
bases. Explain how, provide an example for each of the six factors mentioned,
and explain each example you provide.
- (5 points) Explain what hybridization is. Describe in detail the three
types of hybridization that occur in carbon, and provide a molecular
(skeletal) structure that illustrates each. Be sure to label each carbon
atom in each structure as to the type of hybridization it demonstrates.
Explain why the percent s charcter of a hybrid orbital can affect such
things as bond length and bond strength.
- (5 points) Examine the formation of 2-methyl-2-butene from 2-bromo-2-methylbutane
(Carey, Figure 5.12, p. 197 ) and the formation of t-butyl alcohol from
t-butyl bromide (Carey, Figure 8.5, p. 316). In each reaction, identify
which substances are Lewis acids and Lewis bases. Explain in adequate
detail why each reaction occurs in terms of Lewis acid-base chemistry.
- (5 points) To post your grades on the class web site I must use a
nickname. By law I cannot post your grades using either your name, any
portion of your name, or your social security number. Each person submitting
this quiz must provide me with a 4-10 character nickname. You may change
your nickname at any time during the semester after you
submit it to me as a portion of your grade for this quiz.
