CHEM 1010        Introduction to Chemistry (PS)                                        3
A                           Prerequisite: None
A survey of general chemistry including structure, composition, properties of substances and their transformations is introduced. This course may be taught with a service-learning component. Check course schedule for details.
 

CHEM 1100        Preparatory Chemistry                                                     3
A                           Prerequisite: None
This is an introduction to the basic concepts in chemistry, that emphasizes the application of math principles, use of computers and other techniques to solve chemistry problems. The class is designed for students who need review for the CHEM 1210 series.
 

CHEM 1110        Elementary Chemistry                                                      4
A                           Prerequisites: MATH 1010 or equivalent, concurrent with CHEM 1130
This is an introductory course in general inorganic and organic chemistry of hydrocarbon functional groups. The class primarily is for health science students and other non-chemistry majors.
 

CHEM 1120        Elementary Bioorganic Chemistry                                   4
A                           Prerequisites: CHEM 1110, concurrent with CHEM 1140
This is an introductory course in organic chemistry of heteroatom functional groups and introductory biochemistry. Primarily for health science students and other non-chemistry majors.

This is a graded laboratory taken concurrently with CHEM 1110.
 

CHEM 1125        Elementary Bioorganic Chemistry Lab                            1

This is a graded laboratory taken concurrently with CHEM 1120.
 

CHEM 1210        General Chemistry I                                                          4
F, Sp                     Prerequisites: MATH 1050 with a grade of "C" or better,
                              concurrent with CHEM 1230
Fundamentals of inorganic chemistry including such topics as atomic structure, chemical bonding. chemical reactions, solution chemistry, stoichiometry, periodic table, thermochemistry, chemical kinetics, gases and kinetic molecular theory will be covered.
 

CHEM 1220        General Chemistry II                                                        4
Sp, Su                    Prerequisites: CHEM 1210, concurrent with CHEM 1240
Fundamentals of general chemistry including chemical kinetics, chemical equilibria, acids and bases, precipitation reactions, entropy and free energy, electron transfer reactions, main group and transition elements, nuclear chemistry, hybridization and molecular orbitals, metallic bonding and an introduction to organic chemistry will be taught.
 

CHEM 1215        General Chemistry Lab I                                                  1

CHEM 2310        Organic Chemistry I                                                          4
F, Sp                     Prerequisites: CHEM 1220 with a grade of "C" or better,
                              concurrent with CHEM 2330
This is an introduction to concepts of organic chemistry, includes structure, bonding and reaction mechanisms. Detailed study of alkanes, alkyl hydrides, alkynes and aromatic compounds and an introduction to spectroscopy and stereochemistry are taught.
 

CHEM 2320        Organic Chemistry II                                                        4
Sp, Su                    Prerequisites: CHEM 2310 with a grade of “C" of better,
                              concurrent with CHEM 2340
This is a continued study of major functional groups, including conjugated and aromatic systems, carbonyl compounds, amines. Introduction to biological molecules and selected topics will be covered.
